Ryan, an outspoken Democratic activist, does not have a primary opponent in her challenge Republican U.S. Rep. Ed Whitfield.
Dragging defenseless babies into a political contest is reminiscent of the 2006 U.S. Senate race in Maryland. Then-Lt. Governor Michael Steele felt compelled to launch a pre-emptive television ad, boldly stating that he did not hate puppies.
Steele lost that contest to current Sen. Ben Cardin.
