A new poll of 572 likely Democratic voters by SurveyUSA finds Louisville businessman Bruce Lunsford significantly leading the rest of the Democratic field in the primary race for the U.S. Senate.
Lunsford is ahead in nearly every measured demographic, topping his seven competitors with 42% support among those polled.
The nearest competition for Lunsford in the poll appears to be David L. Williams, who registers 11% support. That candidate shares the same name with the Republican President of the Kentucky Senate, and frequently seeks statewide office. Most recently, candidate Williams lost a 2007 attempt to become Commissioner of Agriculture. In 2004, in a first shot at the U.S. Senate, he lost in the primary to Kentucky's current Lieutenant Governor Daniel Mongiardo.
Louisville businessman Greg Fischer runs third in the poll, grabbing just 6%. James E. Rice measures in at 5% of the vote, while Prospect physician Michael Cassaro polls at 4%.
Seventeen percent of respondents selected "other" as their choice, while 8% indicated they were undecided in the race
SurveyUSA is one of the few firms releasing data on Kentucky's forthcoming election. Their polling methodology is different from most other outfits. They utilize automated systems to conduct nationwide polls, instead of live employees.
CORRECTION: The survey finds 74% of respondents have their "mind made up" about the race, while 24% percent of respondents could "change their mind."
