Voter registration deadline today

The deadline for Kentucky voters to register for the May 20 primary election is today.

Registration forms must be mailed to a voter's local county clerk with an April 21 postmark. County Clerks' offices throughout the Commonwealth will also accept forms submitted by hand until the close of business today.

One stipulation on primary voting is likely to shut-out some voters hoping to cross party lines. A release from the office of Secretary of State Trey Grayson (R-Park Hills) notes that state law "prevents voters from switching their party affiliation after the start of the new calendar year. Those voters will forfeit the ability to vote in either partisan primary."

The Kentucky campaigns of both Democratic Presidential candidates say they have stressed voter registration in recent weeks.

"The Clinton campaign has encouraged people throughout the state and at each of our events to register to vote," said Jamie Radice, Clinton's Kentucky Communications Director. "Kentucky is a critical state for the campaign."

Radice said volunteers distribute registration forms at each Clinton event in the state.

The Obama campaign told PolitickerKY.com last week the campaign was focusing on registration at college campuses. In campus newspapers across the state, full page ads were taken out by the campaign reminding potential voters of today's deadline.
