When surrogates invade

Representatives of the campaigns of both Democratic presidential candidates will be making their ways around the Commonwealth this weekend in advance of Tuesday's primary.

Given that Kentucky has not had a competitive presidential primary in decades, this may be a strange phenomenon for residents, but they need not be alarmed by the invaders: they are a standard campaign tactic.

Obama's side

The campaign of U.S. Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) is sending representatives to across this weekend.

Sunday at Old Hickory Barbeque in Owensboro, former South Carolina Gov. Jim Hodges and "fellow sportsmen" will hold court at 2:45 p.m. with supporters and residents about Obama's positions on gun rights, hunting and fishing.

As part of a statewide get-out-the-vote effort, Hodges and two other surrogates will be making the rounds to 30 different canvassing kick-offs throughout the Commonwealth. Hodges will be assisted by former U.S. Senate candidate and Dallas, Texas, Mayor Ron Kirk as well as former U.S. Sen. Jean Carnahan (D-Mo.) in this effort.

Sunday's surrogate action for Obama includes a "Embrace the Change" Gospel concert in Louisville featuring revered Gospel recording artist Yolanda Adams. The concert will be held at Shawnee Park at 4501 W. Broadway at 4:30 p.m.

Obama's wife, Michelle, is expected in the state in the coming days, but no details are confirmed.

Hillary's side

The surrogate invasion is a two-sided affair. Hillary Clinton herself is carrying much of the campaign's weight this weekend, with five stops throughout the state, but she has some allies in Kentucky as well.

Soap opera star Heather Tom will make five appearances for Clinton in Kentucky this weekend.

An actress on "The Bold and the Beautiful," Tom already stopped in Louisville this morning for a "Breakfast of Champions" event with state Rep. Joni Jenkins (D-Shivley).

At 2:30 p.m., Tom will work a phonebank in the northern Kentucky city of Covington at the Clinton campaign office there. That office is located at 302 Court St., Suite 202.

Tom will then move on to Maifest in Covington, in advance of Clinton's own visit there tonight. The former "Young and the Restless" star will appear at 3:45 p.m.

Sunday will find the one-time "Who's the Boss?" guest star at a "Honk and Holler" event in Ashland at 10:45 a.m. That event will be located on the 700-800 block of Winchester St.

Tom will then move on to Pikeville for another phonebank at that town's Clinton campaign office. She will appear at the office at 137 Division St. at 1:30 p.m.
